I don’t need to be a professional make-up artist to say that the best way to make me feel confident and comfortable when I’m wearing make-up is to have a flawless base. For me the best base for make-up is starting with a foundation that makes my skin look luminous, evens my skin tone and has hella coverage! I have redness across my cheeks as well as skin which is prone to dryness and spots…it’s a sad life but we get over it.
I get over it with the best foundation possible…
I see some foundations like the Becca 24Hr Ultimate Coverage Foundation, or the Hourglass Seamless Foundation Stick which seem to eliminate any imperfections, leaving a flawless base for make-up. Just look at Nikkietutorials youtube channel to see the power of a pricey foundation…
However these foundations cost £40+ a bottle and my student lifestyle doesn’t support those make-up choices.
Plus when the drugstore make-up brands are bringing out foundations which perform amazing, why bother?
Over the past year I have been testing and trying foundation after foundation (all under £15 of course). There have been some VIBES and some absolute disaster purchases, and I thought it was only right to help out my fellow bargain hunters find their holy grail foundation without breaking the bank.
Just as a little side note: I have dry skin with particularly dry patches around my nose and forehead. My skin doesn’t get overly oily throughout the day, but it is prone to redness and spots. Sensitive skin is so fun (said no one ever).
My favourite type of foundation is one that can give me GOOD coverage that doesn’t highlight any dry patches on my skin. It needs to blend easily and leave a nice finish- whether that be matte or glowy. If you are someone who is after a foundation with minimal coverage because you were blessed with naturally flawless skin, this is not the place to be.
Maybelline Superstay 24hr Foundation – £9.99
Why not start on a high- aka the BEST foundation I have come across on the high street? I’m not alone in this revelation as well, every youtuber, blogger and MUA seems to be loving this foundation. The coverage is unbelievable. If you want the best coverage for an affordable price, you need look no further than this foundation. I’ve seen people with both dry and oily skin adore this formula so don’t be put off by the fact I love it if you are a sufferer of oily prone skin. I can’t praise it enough, love love love.
One thing that I have to mention is that unfortunately there isn’t a shade which matches me. From the options they’re either too light, too pink etc. It sucks but if a girl has gotta mix in a dab of a darker shade to get the perfect match- that’s what you gotta do.
L’oreal True Match Foundation – £9.99
This used to be my all time favourite foundation until Maybelline 24hr came along…however it still has a place in my heart. The coverage is still really good, however it is definitely more lightweight on the skin which some people may prefer. It is buildable if you want to amp up the coverage. It leaves a more dewy finish on the skin and in my experiences the formula lasts on the skin all day. No questions why it was my go-to everyday foundation for soooo long.
LA Girl Pro Coverage Foundation – £8.00
This foundation is one of my most recent purchases and it has certainly impressed from the offset. The coverage is so good, maybe even better than the L’oreal True Match dare I say?? The finish is quite satin, however there is a matte edition if you prefer a more matte foundation. Something I noticed straight away when I first used this foundation, was the smell, damn. It reminded me of paint a little bit; it could just be the bottle I got as the smell has worn away but it certainly hit me on that first application.
Maybelline Dream Satin Liquid Foundation – £7.99
I picked this foundation up because it says that it is perfect for dry skin, but I have seen youtubers of all skin types, such as CC Clarke picking up this foundation. The finish this foundation leaves is beautiful; a healthy, satin glow. It has medium coverage, so for me it’s the perfect everyday foundation. If you want to, this foundation is easily buildable to achieve more coverage. For the price you cannot complain.
Revolution Pro Full Coverage Camouflage Foundation – £7.00
Revolution has come through with foundations at a variety of different prices. Revolution Pro came out with the Full Coverage Camouflage Foundation which is such an affordable, high quality product. The formula is thick and leaves a matte finish on the skin. I will often use this foundation for work as it’s an affordable foundation which easily blends. It definitely isn’t a ‘natural’ foundation, if you do prefer a more light-weight, skin like foundation you may prefer the Revolution Pro Foundation Drops (£7). I have to add, for such an affordable brand, the colour shade range of this, and pretty much all of Revolution’s foundation/concealers is amazing!
Kiko Unlimited Foundation – £14.90
This foundation is perfect for people who are a sucker for a full coverage, THICK foundation. The formula and texture reminds me of the Mac Studio Fix foundation, which I always remember me and my friends used to call it ‘paint’. It’s not my favourite foundation because it does feel so thick and heavy on the skin, and I can receive better coverage using a lighter foundation, however I know some people do prefer a more intense foundation.
Obviously there are other amazing drugstore foundations on the market that I haven’t mentioned; from the Revolution Pro Foundation Drops (£7.00) to the NYX Total Control Drop Foundation (£14.00). And let’s not forget the new on the scene, highly recommended Revolution Conceal and Define Foundation (£9). The foundations covered in this blog post are just a selection which I see as covering a variety of areas and preferences of how a foundation can perform.
I hope you found this round up of drugstore foundations helpful in your make-up shopping. Hopefully I’ve highlighted that you don’t need to spend mega £££ to get an amazing foundation. Time to take a trip to Superdrug?
